Last Wednesday, I posted an entry, inviting people to show interest in being involved here on Men Like Me, with issues such as body image, travel and food. I have had interest, but on closer inspection, it’s hard to sort of manage and often, the plot points got lost in translation when it’s come to talking in depth about what topics people wished to be involved in.
There’s also been a little bit of confusion because the first subject of Table Talk and I are on different ends of the spectrum when it comes to body type and the issues we feel we face.
With that being said, I am going to rescind the chance, for now, for other’s to put themselves forward to be involved with Men Like Me, and instead approach it in a different capacity.
The idea behind Table Talk is to get other people’s views on topics, rather than it just be me, always talking about how I feel about something, and comparing the two view points, rather than following one narrative.
Whether someone is large or small in body type, isn’t the issue, it’s about the body image issues that we face as males, and particularly gay males. It’s not about the “sex sells” angle of it, it’s about the openness of discussion and allowing others to see that they’re not alone, and owning what they currently have. Similarly when it comes to travel, and being a tourist in general, it’s about broadening my own scope of things to do in this country, and we as further afield.
And when it comes to food, it’s about discovering that being vegetarian, or even just eating a vegetarian meal once in a while, isn’t the worse thing in the world, and that as a previous meat-eater for 27 years of my life, that you can make the change and it’s not so jarring.
But for now, I will seek out potential collaborators myself, rather than getting people to try and join in and forcefully discuss a topic, because it wasn’t working. It needs to be natural, and for now, I will pick from my circles of friends and acquaintances.
